Downtown Culver City Cleared Its Calendar for Fiesta La Ballona's 75th

Thursday nights at Town Plaza have had a rhythm since 2023: fold-up chairs claim a spot by 6:30, the first notes drift off The Culver Steps by 7, and by 9 the crowd scatters into the restaurants ringing the plaza. This year that rhythm stops a full week sooner than it did last summer, and the reason has less to do with budget and more to do with what's coming eight days later.

The concert series wraps early this year

The city's Summer Sunset Concert Series opened its fourth season on July 16 with The Fab Four, Culver City's favorite Beatles cover band, and kept going every Thursday through the summer, including a July 30 show from Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, the world's first LGBTQ+ mariachi, led by director Carlos Samaniego. The series is a joint production: the City of Culver City's Office of Economic and Cultural Development, with support from the Culver Arts Foundation and host venue The Culver Steps.

Last year, the same free Thursday series ran every Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. until August 28. This year, the city's own event page puts the final show on the calendar for Thursday evenings beginning July 16th at 7 PM in Town Plaza at the Culver Steps, running every Thursday evening until August 20th. That's one fewer Thursday and an eight-day earlier finish than 2025.

"We work hard to book incredibly talented musicians, many of whom tour worldwide, from all different genres," Special Events Manager Edgar Varela said of the series. "These Summer Sunset Concerts are a perfect way to enjoy a full Thursday evening in Culver City."

To avoid parking challenges for the Summer Sunset Music Series, you're encouraged to take Culver CityBus or to walk, bike, ride or take alternative transportation to the event. Alcohol and smoking aren't permitted on site, though you're invited to explore the restaurants in and around the Culver Steps before or after.

Where that week went

Eight days after the last concert, Veterans Memorial Park hosts Fiesta La Ballona, and this year it's a bigger production than usual. 2026 marks the 75th anniversary of Fiesta La Ballona, first held in 1951 through a partnership between the City of Culver City and the Culver City Chamber of Commerce. The dates are set: Friday, August 28 from 4:30 PM to 10 PM, Saturday, August 29 from 12 PM to 10 PM, and Sunday, August 30 from 12 PM to 8 PM at Veterans Memorial Park, 4117 Overland Ave.

What's new for the milestone year is the layout. For the first time, this year's Fiesta will feature two entertainment stages, giving visitors even more ways to enjoy live performances throughout the weekend. Entry stays free, and ride wristbands are available for purchase separately.

Whether it's deliberate scheduling or a fortunate gap on the calendar, the effect is the same: the city gets a quiet week between its longest-running free series and its biggest annual gathering, and that gap lands right before Fiesta doubles its stage count for the first time in 75 years.

Three weekends, three different reasons to be downtown

Two low-key Thursdays, a midweek business-association mixer, then one large three-day weekend that closes out the summer. It's a tighter, more front-loaded stretch than the calendar has looked in past years.

A few blocks west, Helms Avenue is playing a different game

While downtown compresses its event calendar into one big weekend, the Helms Design District is rebuilding its foot traffic the slower way, lease by lease. Costa Mesa favorite Folks Pizzeria opened in Culver City this spring in the Helms Design District, taking over the former Lustig space at 3273 Helms Ave, marking the brand's first step outside Orange County. Chef-owner Joey Booterbaugh and partner Chloe Tran launched Folks in 2019, and the Costa Mesa original built its name on long-fermented 14-inch pies and a short, carefully chosen natural-wine list.

The timing lines up with a larger reset at Helms. The Culver City location fills the space Lustig left behind when it closed in early 2025, landing Folks on one of the busier corners of the Helms food corridor. The property has been resetting its tenant lineup more broadly this year: a smaller-format IKEA was expected to open in the district this spring, and ownership has been pursuing new restaurant tenants to round out the retail mix, an approach aimed at rebuilding foot traffic after a run of closures and turnover on the property.

It's a different lever than the one downtown is pulling. Town Plaza draws a crowd for one concentrated weekend and lets it disperse. Helms Avenue is betting on daily habits, a pizza order here, a design-district errand there, adding up over a full year instead of one festival.

What this means for the rest of your August

If you're planning around the neighborhood rather than around a single event, the next three weeks give you a template: two easy Thursday evenings at the Steps before the season wraps, a midweek stop at the Tropical Staycation if downtown mixers are your speed, and then a real commitment on the last weekend of August when Fiesta takes over Veterans Memorial Park with two stages instead of one. If pizza's on your list before then, 3273 Helms Ave is worth the detour, especially if you remember what used to be in that space and haven't been back since.

None of this requires a car if you don't want one. Culver CityBus reaches both Town Plaza and the Helms corridor, and Veterans Memorial Park is a short trip from most of downtown.
